Why MHFA in Sport?

The #1 protective factor against mental health challenges and suicide in young people is 1 trusted adult - that's you.

We know that almost half of our young people are currently experiencing a mental health challenge, causing severe impairment for 1 in 5 (National Institutes of Health, 2022).

We know that 70% of coaches agree that while they have a role in supporting the mental health of student-athletes, almost 50% report that they lack the confidence to recognize and approach a student-athlete who may be facing one.

With more than 340,000 student athletes competing in North Carolina high schools, coaches, athletic directors, athletic trainers, and others who interact with student athletes (Team Around the Team)--we have a tremendous opportunity

Mental Health First Aid through WholeHealth Sport equips coaches and the Team Around the Team with tools and skills to:

  • Notice signs and symptoms of a mental health challenge
  • Approach an athlete with care and compassion
  • Connect athletes to national and community resources, as appropriate
